instrumentales pendant mon temps libre.

Pretty Lights, Gramatik, Emancipator, Kno, Nujabes, RJD2, ANT, Kanye West, Big K.R.I.T., The Audible Doctor, deeB, E.Dan, Big Jerm, Bonobo, Little People just to name a few.

King Shi – The Asian Wind LP

Étant un fan de Kanye depuis longtemps, j’ai été déçu de ce dernier projet, « but you can’t knock his work ethic and passion ».

Original version:

– First of all, who are you and where are you from?

My name is Andrew. I am from Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, USA, just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

– Since when do you play music? and how did you become a beatmaker?

I started making music around 2007. I was inspired by Girl Talk’s “Night Ripper” to start making mash-up music. I did that for about 4-5 years before transitioning from party/dance remixes to a more downtempo, “ChillHop” sound.

– Why’s your name « Derlee »?

Derlee is the nickname given to me by some of my friends back in grade school. It is a shortened, phonetic version of my last name.

– Can you tell us everything you’ve done since the beginning of your activity as a beatmaker? Can you tell us about your latest release, your LP, Summer Nights?

I’ve been fascinated with the use of sampling for as long as I can remember. The idea of reviving songs that may have otherwise been forgotten, into something new and fresh is amazing. I purchased the NI Maschine in 2011, and ever since then I’ve
been making instrumentals in my spare time. I released a compilation of beats called “Mellow Morning Vol. 1” on Soundcloud that some people showed interest in, so ever since then I began to post more. The Summer Nights LP was a project I worked on last summer. The main idea was to evoke some of the feelings from those warm, laidback summer nights that we all know and love.

– What are your current projects?

I’m currently working on my next release for this summer. I don’t have a name for it yet, but right now I have around 30 new tracks in the works.

– Can you tell us about your incredible song « Dreamin »? How do you explain the huge success of this title (130,000 plays) and how do you live? Did you expect such a success for this song?

I’m extremely grateful for all the attention “Dreamin’” has received. I made it about 2 summers ago, and didn’t think much of it at the time. A few blogs stumbled on it and eventually the plays began to come. I’m happy for the opportunity to have reached so many people. Some of the comments I’ve received really make it all worthwhile.

– What label are you closest to? Dusted Wax Kingdom or Almeda?

I’ve been a fan of Dusted Wax Kingdom far before I had the opportunity to do a release with them. That release really helped from an exposure standpoint, and I’ll always be thankful for that. Almeda is collective of artists I’ve connected with on Soundcloud recently. The guys on Almeda are extremely talented, and I’m looking forward to working with them for the first time very soon.

– Which artists have influenced you?

Pretty Lights, Gramatik, Emancipator, Kno, Nujabes, RJD2, ANT, Kanye West, Big K.R.I.T., The Audible Doctor, deeB, E.Dan, Big Jerm, Bonobo, Little People just to name a few.

– Can you give us a song that is engraved in you?

Spin Doctors – Two Princes. When I was 4 or 5 I used to have a plastic Fisher-Price karaoke system with this song on cassette. I used to pretend I knew the words.

– A recent artist you’re listening right now?

King Shi – The Asian Wind LP

– Your best album in 2013 ?

My favorite album of 2013 was Pretty Lights’ A Color Map of The Sun.

– In one sentence, what did you think about last Kanye West, Yeezus ?

As a long time Kanye West fan, I was disappointed with it, but you cannot knock his work ethic and passion.

– What song during a zombie attack ?

RJD2 – The Horror
